About Cannock

Heath, coal and the Chase

Cannock Chase began as a royal hunting forest. In 1290 it was granted to the Bishop of Lichfield as a private chase, and its heath and woodland survive today as a protected landscape.

Underneath, there was coal. Mining on the Chase goes back to at least 1298 and carried on for some 700 years, until Littleton Colliery closed in 1993. Towns such as Hednesford grew up around the pits.

In the First World War the Chase held one of the largest military training camps in England, and cemeteries from that time can still be visited. Castle Ring, the largest Iron Age hillfort in Staffordshire, stands within it.

How we help

How we help Cannock families

Four areas we focus on in Cannock, starting with hip replacement.

1

Recovery after a hip replacement

A new hip needs the right movement at the right time. We follow your surgeon’s precautions, help you manage pain and swelling, and rebuild strength and walking in your own home. We also practise the everyday jobs that matter: the bed, the chair, the bath and the car.

First month’s aimPain and swelling settling, a steadier walk, and the everyday movements done safely.

What happens after a joint replacement
2

Falls prevention and balance

We use a balance assessment to see where you are, then build leg power and balance with exercises you can do at home. A home hazard check is part of the plan.

First month’s aimBetter balance, and the biggest hazards at home put right.

3

Spinal stenosis and disc problems

Leg heaviness, back pain and a short walking distance can all come from the spine. We work on posture, flexibility and strength, and on pacing, so you can walk further with less discomfort.

First month’s aimA clearer idea of what eases symptoms, and a routine that helps you walk further.

4

Multiple sclerosis

MS can change from week to week. We work on walking, balance, strength and managing fatigue, and teach pacing so a good day is not followed by a bad one.

First month’s aimA plan that flexes with your symptoms, and ways to stay mobile.

Getting back outdoors

For many people, recovery means getting back outside. Tell us where you want to walk, and we will work back from it.

  • “Walking round the block without stopping”
  • “A gentle walk on the Chase”
  • “Getting in and out of the car without help”
  • “Managing the stairs at home”
  • “Going to the shops on my own”
  • “Standing long enough to cook a meal”
