A city that made things, and still does

  1. Early 1100s

Birmingham is established as a market town. Trade in the city has never really stopped since.

  2. Around 1553

A local goldsmith, Roger Pemberton, is recorded as one of the city’s first jewellers.

  3. 1780 to 1800

The number of recorded jewellers grows from 28 to around 400, and Birmingham earns its names as the “workshop of the world” and the “city of a thousand trades”.

  4. 1824

John Cadbury opens a grocery selling cocoa and drinking chocolate. The business later moves out to Bournville, built as a model village for its workers.

  5. Today

The Jewellery Quarter still produces more than 40% of the UK’s handmade jewellery.

How we help

Care for the whole city

Four areas we focus on across Birmingham. Each one links to the full guide.

1

Stroke rehabilitation at home

Stroke rehabilitation is a large part of our work in Birmingham. We start with what you want to get back to, then rebuild movement in the arm, leg and hand in the rooms and on the stairs you actually live with, whether that is a terrace in Aston or a flat in Edgbaston. Family and carers are shown how to help safely.

First month’s aimAgree the goals that matter, find the first exercises that make a difference, and build a routine that works between visits.

2

Hip and knee replacement

Whether your operation was at the Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands or a private hospital, the work is the same: settle the swelling, get the joint moving, and make the stairs and the bath safe at home. We follow your surgeon’s guidance throughout.

First month’s aimLess swelling, more bend, and confidence on your own stairs.

What happens after a joint replacement
3

Falls and frailty

Many falls begin with a small loss of strength or confidence. We test balance, leg strength and getting up from a chair, then build them back at home, and help the family put simple safeguards in place.

First month’s aimSteadier on your feet, and a home that works with you rather than against you.

How falls prevention works
4

Brain injury, MS and Parkinson’s

Neurological conditions change from day to day, and so should the plan. We work on walking, balance, transfers and fatigue in your own surroundings, and adjust as you change.

First month’s aimA plan that fits how your condition behaves across the week, and safe ways to keep doing what you value.
