Coventry through the centuries

  1. 1043

Earl Leofric and Lady Godiva endow a Benedictine monastery, the start of Coventry. The famous ride through the streets is a later legend, first written down over a century after her death.

  2. 1700s and 1800s

Coventry becomes one of Britain’s three main centres of watch and clock making.

  3. 1896

Daimler opens a factory. Bicycle makers turn to motor cars, and by 1913 there are 23 car makers in the city.

  4. The Second World War

Firebombing destroys much of the city centre and leaves the old cathedral a shell. Basil Spence’s new cathedral is built alongside the ruins.

  5. 1977

The Specials form in Coventry and help launch 2 Tone, a mix of ska and punk with a message of racial unity.

  6. 2021

Coventry is UK City of Culture.

How we help

How we help Coventry families

Four areas we focus on in Coventry. Each one links to the full guide.

1

Stroke recovery and one-sided weakness

After a stroke, one side of the body can feel unfamiliar. We retrain movement in the arm and leg step by step, with standing balance and walking practice built around your own home. Your physiotherapist shows family how to help without taking over.

First month’s aimStart rebuilding movement on the affected side, and practise standing and transferring safely.

How stroke rehab works at home

2

Frailty and everyday mobility

Frailty is not a fixed state. Gentle, regular, supervised exercise can bring strength and stamina back. We start from what is manageable today and build towards getting up from a chair, walking around the house and managing the stairs.

First month’s aimBuild strength and stamina for the everyday movements that matter most to you.

Elderly rehabilitation at home

3

Recovery after orthopaedic surgery

After a hip, knee or fracture operation, the first weeks set the tone. We help you manage pain and swelling, restore movement and get walking again, following your surgeon’s guidance, in the rooms where you will actually be moving about.

First month’s aimPain and swelling under control, and a clear, safe progression in the weeks ahead.

Post-surgical rehab at home

4

Neck and back pain

Persistent neck or low back pain wears people down. We look at how you sit, stand and move around your home, then agree a mix of hands-on treatment and exercise that you can keep up.

First month’s aimUnderstand what helps and what does not, and start a routine you can sustain.
