  • Family and carer coaching: Teaching safe ways to support and move an affected arm during everyday activities — this is one of the most practical, high-impact parts of managing shoulder pain outside of formal sessions.

What to Avoid

A few common mistakes can make shoulder pain worse rather than better:

  • Pulling on the affected arm during transfers or repositioning, rather than supporting it properly
  • Overhead pulley exercises done without guidance — sometimes recommended in the past, these can actually aggravate a subluxed or unstable shoulder if not carefully controlled
  • Prolonged immobility, which allows stiffness to set in and makes eventual movement more painful
  • Ignoring pain in the hope it will resolve on its own — early, appropriate management tends to produce better outcomes than a wait-and-see approach

When to Seek Further Assessment

Speak to your physiotherapist or GP if you notice:

  • Sudden, significantly worsening pain rather than gradual improvement
  • Visible, worsening deformity or asymmetry at the shoulder
  • Loss of the small amount of movement you previously had
  • Signs of a fall or new injury to the arm or shoulder
